THE FAIR.

The tenth annual Fair of the Lawrenceburgh Fair Association held last week was a great financial success. The attendance was very large, and the exhibition was all that could be desired.

In the Culinary Department of Class 39 the entries were quite numerous. Mrs. Mary Johnston, of Aurora, was the successful contestant for best loaf of yeast bread; Mrs. A S Wood, also of Aurora, took the premiums on best loaf of bakers and salt rising bread. Mrs. R A Larimer, of this city, best loaf of brown, and Mrs. Richard Mason, also of this city, best loaf of corn bread. Mrs. Carrie Campbell, of Guilford, took premiums for best butter.

Most of premiums in Class 40—Fruit preparations, pickles, honey, etc., were awarded to Mrs. Esther Griffin, of Aurora.

Class 41—for girls and boys under 16, was well represented. Miss Laura Larimer, of this city, captured nine premiums and Miss Julia Allen, of Switzerland county, eight, these two young Misses being the chief competitors. Leyman Tebbs, son of County Clerk Tebbs, was awarded a premium for a sketch from nature that was worthy of especial mention.

The contest for the three prizes offered by E. S. Downey, for a farmer’s foot race was exciting. There were seven runners. The winners were Ben Wilson, first, an Oliver Chilled Plow; William Cosby, second, a Moon Cutting Box; and James Clements, third, an Excelsior Horse Poke.

The contest between four ladies in harnessing and hitching a horse to a buggy was the most interesting feature of the day. Miss Jaquith, of Wright’s Corners, Ind., won with ease and grace in 2 minutes and 30 seconds just one minute ahead of the next best competitor.

The gentlemen’s equestrian ring was the best one ever seen in this end of the State. There were nine excellent riders in the ring (to say nothing of the tenth one—the writer) and the exhibition of graceful horsemanship was extraordinary. Mr. Julius White, of Newport, Ky., amid shouts of approbation and enthusiasm from his admirers, and the courteous tipping of hats of his defeated competitors was declared the winner of the special prize, a handsome coffee urn.

The Gentleman’s Equestrian Ring was an exciting one. The riders were all old gentlemen, and they showed that they had not forgotten their early practice. They were S. Wilber, G. W. Lane, A. Hill, Strawder Cheek, J. D. Curtis, J. M. Moody and J. R. Cole.

After an exciting contest the committee tied the ribbon on Abram Hill, of Aurora. Moody said if the premium had been for the best looking man, he would have taken it.

The entries in the Ladies’ Ring for driving were: Miss Clara Covington, Rising Sun; Miss Anna Golding, Sparta; Miss Ella House, Aurora; Miss Libbie Hill, Aurora; Miss Mary Byron, Aurora; Mrs. J. Thomasson, Petersburg; Miss Anna Johnson, Sparta; Miss Helen Buffington, Aurora.

Miss Buffington received first and Miss Thomasson second premium.

In the Ladies’ Riding Ring the following were the entries: Miss Clara Covington, Miss Libbie Hill, Miss J. Thomasson. Miss Hill received first, Miss Thompson second premium.

Mrs. George Golding, of Sparta, received the premium for hitching horse to buggy the quickest she having four competitors.
