THE EXHIBITION OF HORSES
commenced. The number of entries of Horses for all Purposes was large, and some very fine stock was exhibited. In the first ring—Stallions four years old and over—there were some as good horses shown, as the West can produce. After quite a spirited contest the blue ribbon (first premium) was awarded to Tom Traveller, twelve years old, sired by old Tom Crowder, and owned by H. B. Corbin, of Boone County, Kentucky. He is a beautiful bay, large, well formed, and shows his stock in a remarkable degree. The entries of Farm and Draught horses were also numerous, and many superior horses were shown. The display of saddle horses was very fine, and great interest was manifested in the exhibition. We are not certain that the following is a complete list of the awards:

  • Stallions 4 yrs. and over; Wm. Dorrill, Ohio County, 1st prem., $12; J. L. Mulford, 2d, $6.
  • Stallions 3 yrs. and over, W. C. Mulford, 1st prem., $8.

There were three entries of matched horses of which Jacob Giegoldt took the first prem., of $10 with a pair of beautiful little bays.

The entries of Mules and Jacks were not numerous, but some very fine stock was shown. The following are the awards:

  • Best Jack any age, 5 ents; O. P. Cobb, 1st prem., $10; James Hudwin, Jessamine County, Kentucky, 2d $5.

  • Sucking mules; Benj. Eubank, 1st $2; P. Gray, 2d $1.

There were only two entries of Stallions exhibiting five or more colts, for the Sweepstakes premium of $25; but it was a spirited affair and much interest was felt in it by the spectators. First came in the well known, gallant old Tom Crowder, owned by Reed & Giegoldt, followed by the following galaxy of his progeny: Tom Traveller, owned by H. B. Corbin; Long Tom, by J. M. West; Bob Ridley, by Wm. Dodd; Tom Wonder No. 2, by G. A. Golding and Young Tom Crowder, by John Kittle. These had not more than taken their stations, before a shout announced the entrance of the celebrated Morgan Comet, owned by Alfred Glenn, of Switzerland County, followed by the following proud array of his offspring: Young Comet, owned by John Tufts; Iron Morgan by H. F. Wright; Justin Morgan, by Wm. Snyder; Young Morgan, by Simmons Baldwin; and two very fine mares owned by F. Worley and J. C. Jenkins. When these had all entered the spectators felt that they had never seen a ring of finer horses. So superior, and equally balanced were the good qualities of the rival horses, that the judges were a long time in coming to a decision, but at length the blue ribbon was awarded to old Comet. In the sweepstakes list of the best brood mares there were three competitors for the premium of twenty five dollars. It was won by Francis Worley, with a very fine animal. We do not pretend that the foregoing is a full report of the Horse and Mule show, but we believe is correct as far as it goes. After this followed the exhibition of

DURHAM STOCK,

which would not have done discredit to the interior counties of old Kentucky. R. C. Anderson and Jacob Tanner, of Boone County, Kentucky, obtained respectfully the first and second pms. on the best two year old bull—pms. $6 and $3. The former also obtained the 1st of 4, and O. P. Cobb the 2d; on best bull five year old. For the best bull calf R. C. Anderson obtained both 1st and 2d pms. The 1st pm. on best cow three yrs. old $8, was awarded to John Brumblay, 2d, $4, to R. C. Anderson. The former also obtained the first pms. on Heifers one yr. old, and on heifer calves—John Newman getting the 2d on the latter.

J. C. Jenkins, of Petersburg, received the first premium on FAT CATTLE.

Mr. Jenkins is the fortunate owner of more fine HOGS than any other person in this vicinity.

David Ellis, of Carroll County, Kentucky, got the first premium, $5.

FRUIT LIST.

Two exhibitors: Aaron Miller of Dearborn, and James P. Kelley, of Boone County, Kentucky.

MECHANICAL DEPARTMENT.

A grain cleaner made by Martin Trester.

Mrs. Mary Morrow exhibited some fine specimens of cabinet work.

A. Epstein exhibited some clothing made in his establishment.

Some of the paintings and drawings exhibited were quite creditable. We noticed a specimen of each by Miss Lloyd, of Petersburg, Kentucky, which were executed with taste and correctness. Also, a fancy painting by Geo. W. Angelo, which took the first premium, was very well executed. In this class, also, the magnificent ambrotypes and melainotypes of Mr. N. H. Tuck attracted universal attention.

There were some old letters and documents on exhibition by W. I. Edwards, Esq., which attracted considerable attention.

MUSIC,

devolved upon the Moore’s Hill Sax Horn and the Hossier Brass Bands. The following gentlemen compose the band: John W. Bush, President; A. D. Hopping, Secretary; G. Y. Squibb, Leader; W. S. Bailey, John R. Cole and E. R. Squibb.
