County Business.

Among other business transacted by the County Commissioners at their June session was the following:

Thomas Delaney, J. S. Girard and James Plew, Ira M. Taylor and John E. Fallis, Vevay; Andrew Schafer, Patriot; George Scott, Florence, were granted license to retail liquors.

Wm. H. Melick and other petitioned for vacation of highway in Cotton Township. There being no remonstrance, the Board ordered the road vacated.

Robt. D. Fox and others petitioned for vacation of highway in Cotton Township. There being no remonstrance, the Board ordered the road vacated.

Geo. W. Roberts was appointed a Constable for Craig Township, and Wm. C. Lientz, a Constable for York Township.

Henry Waltz and others petitioned for the vacation of a highway in Craig and Jefferson Townships. There being no remonstrance, the Board ordered the road vacated.

Thomas Gibbons and others petitioned for a change of highway in Posey Township. Samuel Lostutter, Joel Davis and Henry Myers, were appointed viewers, They will meet at the residence of Mat. Long, in Barkworks, June 18th.

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented orders redeemed by him for the quarter ending May 31, 1884, amounting to $24,273.95—compared with Auditor’s register of orders issued, found correct and ordered cancelled.

The Board appointed Election Inspectors as follows:

  • In Jefferson Township—Jacob S. Shadday, Trustee Inspector of Precinct No. 3, by virtue of his office; Precinct No. 1, at the Court House in Vevay, Robert A. Knox; at Precinct No. 2, William A. Peters.
  • In York Township—Thomas Armstrong, Trustee, Inspector of Precinct No. 1, at Florence, by virtue of his office; Precinct No. 2, at Markland, Cornelius Miller.
  • In Posey Township—James W. Love, Trustee, Inspector Precinct No. 1, at Patriot, by virtue of his office; Precinct No. 2, at Davis’ Corner, Wesley Powell.
  • In Cotton Township—Orson A. Potter, Inspector Precinct No. 1, at East Enterprise, by virtue of his office; at Precinct No. 2, at Fairview, David B. Lee.
  • In Pleasant Township—L. B. Slawson, Trustee, Inspector of Precinct No. 1, at Bennington, by virtue of his office; Precinct No. 2, at Moorefield, Jefferson C. Smith.
  • In Craig Township—Wm. Tait, Trustee, Inspector of Precinct No. 1, at Braytown, by virtue of his office; Precinct No. 2, at the house of John F. Cotton, Peter Ramseyer.

The Board of Equalization, composed of Perry K. Cotton, David Lee, Samuel E. Pleasants (appointed by Judge Allison), and the County Commissioners, met Monday, June 2d, and adjourned Tuesday, the 3d. The Assessor’s report were in good shape and approved. But few appeals were made to the Board, and they were satisfactorily adjusted.

John N. Searcy, ex Trustee of Posey Township, filed a claim for $160.50, for interest on $609.34, for April 1, 1878 up to date of rendition of judgment against him, Sept. 15, 1882, it being afterward ascertained that Searcy was entitled to a credit for said amount of $609.34. The Board decided that Searcy was entitled to a credit of $160.50 on his settlement with James W. Love, present Trustee of Posey Township.

Physicians appointed for paupers and poor persons:

  • Pleasant Township, Dr. R. G. Simpson, at 20 for Bennington Precinct; Dr. Scott Culbertson, Moorefield precinct, $16.00.
  • Craig and Jefferson Township, including Poor Far, Dr. T. J. Griffith, at $140.00.
  • York Township, Dr. J. M. W. Langsdale, at $30.00.
  • Posey Township, Dr. E. M. Cheever, at $60.00.
  • No contract was awarded for Cotton Township, but Orson Potter was authorized to contract with Drs. Cheever and Simpson for the pauper practice of the Township, making division of the Townships, at cost not to exceed $30.
