County Business.

Among other business transacted by the County Commissioners, (Robert Scott, William Brindley and W. H. Scott,) was the following:

Charles G. Adams, County Treasurer elect, who will take possession of the office September 1, 1885, filed his bond for $75,000, which was approved.

John D. Myers, Markland; Andrew Schafer, Patriot; Taylor & Fallis, Thomas Delaney, Vevay; George C. Scott, Florence, were granted license to retail liquors.

In the matter of petition of Jacob Leatherbury and others for establishment of public road. Dismissed because there was not the names of 12 freeholders to petition.

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented to the Board the following county bonds, which have been paid and redeemed by him out of the county bond tax. [See newspaper for details.]

James H. Hitchens and Elmer Edmonson were released from paying poll tax.

Petition of Linda Shaw, A. J. Waltz and others, for vacation of highway—continued to next term.

Wm. C. Robinson, County Treasurer, presented orders redeemed by him for quarter ending May 31, 1885, amounting to $26,698.13. Examined, found correct and cancelled

The application of County Superintendent for use of Court House for Teachers’ Institute was refused, also for use of Odd Fellows for Decoration Day. The Board gave as reason that it is not advisable to change the order of the Board in regard to the use of the Court House. (Later.—County Superintendent granted use of room, on condition that a stage shall be erected, and that the room be not injured.)

J. W. Love, Trustee of Posey Township, reported to the Board that the floor of the Lower Grant’s Creek bridge is rotten and needs a new floor, and the same will cost more than $50. Wm. H. Scott, Commissioner, was appointed to examine said bridge, and if in his judgment it needs a new floor, or other repairs, he is authorized to have the work done.

The Board levied taxes. [See newspaper for details.]

There being several feeble-minded children in the County Poor House, the Auditor was ordered to correspond with the authorities of the State Institution for Feeble Minded Children, and if correspondence results favorably, then Wm. Brindley, Commissioner, is authorized to send the children to that institution.

There being a law passed by last Legislature authorizing joint Orphans’ Homes, the Auditor is ordered to correspond with the Auditor and Commissioners of Ohio County in regard to establishing a joint home for orphan children.

Joseph Rogers and others petitioned for an allowance to build a culvert near Joseph Rogers and Wm. Glenn’s, on the Moorefield and Pleasant road. The Board could find no law authorizing them to make such an appropriation, and therefore declined to grant the request.

Physicians for poor were appointed as follows:

  • Jefferson and Craig Townships and Poor House—Dr. J. H. Shaddy, at $105 per year.
  • York Township—Dr. J. H. Ross, at $20.
  • Posey Township—Dr. E. Cheever, at $60.
  • Pleasant Township—East, or Bennington Precinct, Dr. R. G. Simpson, at $25; west, or Moorefield Precinct, D. Scott Culbertsan, at $20.
  • Cotton Township—Dr. J. W. Vanasdol, at $40.

The following persons were appointed inspectors of election precincts:

  • Jefferson, Precinct No. 1, Court House—R. G. Ormsly.
  • Jefferson, Precinct No. 2, LeClerc House—Harry Weals.
  • York, No. 2, Markland—R. W. Galbreath.
  • Posey, No. 2, Davis’ Corner—Jacob Baker.
  • Cotton, No. 2, Fairview—D. B. Lee
  • Pleasant, No. 2, Moorfield—J. C. Smith
  • Craig, No. 2, J. F. Cotton’s—Augustus Hatton

In the matter of the petition of Wm. Walker and others for a bridge over Grant’s Creek at the crossing of the Quercus Grove and North’s Landing Road, it was ordered that the Auditor advertise for sealed proposals for stone work and iron bride. The bids will be opened Tuesday, August 4th. When completed the bridge will be 89 feet long and 14 feet wide.

There being a vacancy in the office of Justice of the Peace in Vevay William S. Tower was appointed to fill the vacancy until the next township election.
