Switzerland County Commissioners – Mar 1878

The Switzerland County, Indiana Commissioners’ proceedings appeared in:

Commissioners’ Court.

The Board drew a Grand Jury for the March Term, 1878, as follows:

  • Theodore Pickett, John H. Brown, 1st District.
  • Wade H. Jack, Abner Gates, 2d District.
  • Henry Tinker, Leonard Griswold, 3d District.

For the October Term, 1878:

  • Wm. R. Protsman, Justi Dow, 1st District.
  • Samuel Lostutter, W. P. Searcy, 2d District.
  • Woodson Long, Charles J. Ryan, 3d District.

A. B. Vanatter, Trustee of Cotton Township, presented his report for the year ending March 1, 1878. [see newspaper for report.]

Elwood Mead was appointed as one of the two scholars or students to which this county is entitled, to Purdue University.

The following places of voting were fixed by the Board. [See newpaper.]

The Trustees were ordered to make reports to the Board on the second Monday in April next.

It was ordered by the Board, that hereafter County Orders or Warrants be cancelled by writing the word “cancelled” across the back of the same, that they be put up in bundles and properly labeled, and that the Treasurer require each payee to write his or her name across the back of the order or warrant, so as to show to whom the money was paid.

George W. McKay, John H. Brown and Joseph Cowan, were appointed as viewers, in the matter of the petition of Perry K. Cotton and others for a change, vacation and location of a highway near J. G. Coleman’s, in Craig Township, to report a the June Term.

C. J. Robenstein, Treasurer, presented to the Board the county orders redeemed by him since the last meeting of the Board, which were examined with the Treasurer’s Register and Auditor’s books, and cancelled, amounting to $10,399.55.

Jacob Banta was appointed Superintendent of the two bridges across Indian Creek, and the bridges across Hunt’s and Plum Creeks, and authorized to have the same repaired when needed.

Philander Morrison the same for Log Lick bridge, with same authority.

William Stewart for the bridges in York and Posey Townships, with same authority.

Jacob Banta was appointed Superintendent of the Poor House and Farm.

The matters in controversy between this and Ripley county were adjusted and settled, the amount being $1,202.36.

The bridge across Goose Creek was ordered to be closed up as unsafe.
