COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES.

LAWRENCEBURGH HIGH SCHOOL.

Few finer audiences ever assembled in the Court room than that which greeted the High School graduating class on last Friday evening. The audience was composed of interested and appreciative people, and they voted the Thirteenth Annual Commencement a glorious success. The graduating class consisted of five young gentlemen and two young ladies.

The exercises opened with the debate: “Resolved, That women should be allowed to vote.” Miss Mary Sanks taking the affirmative in the discussion, while Miss Lizzie Schaerger sustained the negative of the question.

Tolbert Sortwell, in an oration, dilated in a very interesting manner on the subject of “Knavishness.”

Ira Miller’s oration was an excellent one upon the subject of “Luck and Pluck.”

“Loyalty” was the subject of Harry Sim’s oration.

The debate, “Resolved, that Jefferson was a greater man than Lincoln,” was next on the programme, and the question was discussed by the honor boys. Charles Hodel was given the valedictory, first honor, while Clinton Fitch was made salutatorian.

Lawrenceburg Public Schools Commencement – 1884

Commencement of the Lawrenceburg Public Schools in Dearborn County, Indiana for 1884 appeared in:

THE PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT.

The eleventh annual commencement of the Lawrenceburg Public Schools, at the Court House, Friday evening, June 27th, was, like all these entertainments, a matter of much interest to our citizens generally. The Court House was crowded, and the exercises were creditable all the way through.

The Salutatory, “Whence? Whither?” by Lulu Smashea, was an excellent production, and was distinctly uttered.

“Hermit Crabs of Society,” by Julia Akers, was, as its title indicates, a kind of medley on that portion of humanity unbalanced. It was a creditable paper.

“The Hour Before Dawn,” by Tillie Schwartz, was a well written essay, full of good points, and well read.

“In the Sweat of they Face,” by May Murnan, was a characteristic essay. It was original in thought, was portrayed in strong language, and coming from one whose practical ideas were in harmony with her thought, it was well received by the audience.

“Mountain Making Slow Work,” by Louisa Howard, was a thoughtful and well prepared essay, and was delivered in a clear, distinct voice.

“When the Geese Cackle, Let the Nightingale be Still,” by Mattie Freeman, was a unique production, full of good ideas, and pleasingly and gracefully rendered.

“Whip Up, or Get Out of the Way,” by F. Franklin Tilley, the only male graduate of the school, was a production practical in its bearing. The motto is a good one for the boys to take with them into the arena of life, and it will be found necessary, if they keep up in the race to use the spurs and whip.

THE PUBLIC SCHOOL COMMENCEMENT.

The Tenth Annual Commencement of the Public Schools of this city was held in the Court House on Friday night, June 22d, 1883. It was, as it always is, an occasion of general interest to our people, and the Court House was well filled with an intelligent and appreciative audience.

The salutatory was by Miss Ada F. Fitch, and was a most excellent production, well delivered.

“When the Tide Turns,” by Miss Carrie D. Schleicher, was clearly and distinctly uttered, and was a good essay.

Miss Anna Sembach took “The Journey of a Day,” and showed its dubious paths and pointed out its stumbling blocks that might be avoided by others. It was an excellent essay, full of wholesome facts.

“The Web of Life” was woven by Miss Lillie Rooke in a commendable manner and the subject was well treated in a common sense way.

Miss Flora M. Walter dwelt amid the “Starry Heavens.” Her theme was elevating, and sparkled with the gems of thought that have been strewn along her pathway. It was a well written composition, and pleasing in its manner.

“Ascending the Hill” was the subject of Miss Lillie Fichter’s essay. This was a plain, practical production, containing many truths of value to all. It was well read, and gave evidence of much originality in the author.

“At the End of the Threshing Machine” was the only boy in the class, Edward Y. Chapin. Young Chapin acquitted himself admirably, and had an excellent essay-address, the valedictory, full of sharp points and good sense well presented.
