Dearborn County Cases in Indiana Territory Court Orders

Dearborn County suffered a courthouse fire on 6 March 1826 that destroyed all records. See Dearborn County Reconstructed Records for more details.

Dearborn County Reconstructed Probate Records

Dearborn County, Indiana suffered a courthouse fire on 6 March 1826 that destroyed all records. A Board of Commissioners to Perpetuate Testimony was established to re-record some records. Dearborn County Deed Book CC contains estate records that were re-recorded after the fire. Below are abstracts of those records.

A Farm for Sale,

On the north fork of Hogan, two miles from Aurora, and five miles from Lawrenceburgh in Dearborn county, containing 70 ACRES of good land; 40 acres of which are under good improvement. There is a good dwelling house, a never failing well of water, and several excellent springs on the farm. Also, a Horse Mill now in operation; together with several other buildings on the premises. Notice is hereby given, that I will apply to the Dearborn Circuit Court at their next term, to be held in Lawrenceburgh, to have a division of the following lots to wit: Out lot No. 7 in the town of Hardinsburgh—a piece of ground lying in the south west corner of Section No. 2, Range 1, west of West street, in the said town of Hardinsburgh, supposed to contain one acres and a half—and in-lots Nos. — as set forth in the deed made by John St. Clair Jr. and his wife, heirs of Henry Hardon, the original proprietor of the town of Hardinsburgh, to James M’Kinney.

I will also apply to said court to have the Streets and Alleys in said town of Hardinsburgh opened according to the plat thereof.

There are also on the land a bearing orchard and good sugar camp, and several large and never-failing springs. The above land will be sold low for cash only. SHERIFF’S SALE.

By virtue of sundry executions & Venditioni exponas to me directed from the Clerks office of the Dearborn circuit court, I will expose to sale on the second day of April next, at the Court House door in the town of Lawrenceburg, the rents and profits of the following described Lands and Town Lots for the term of seven years, if the same will not sell for sufficient to satisfy the said executions &c. I will forthwith at the same time and place offer the fee simple of the same for the best price it will bring in cash, to wit:

Two-thirds of the Ox Saw mill and lot, No. __. Also Lot No. __ in New Lawrenceburg—also lots No. 18 and 27 with buildings on the same, in the town of Hartford; also the undivided half of the N. W. quarter of Sec. No. 29, town 4 range 3 west, Seized and taken as the property of Noah Noble & Co., at the suit of Daniel Lynn.

By virtue of sundry writs of venditioni exponas to me directed from the Clerks office of the Dearborn Circuit Court, I will expose to sale on the 2d day of July next at the Court House door in the town of Lawrenceburg, the rents and profits of the following described Town Lots, for the term of seven years; if the same will not sell for sufficient to satisfy the said writs, I will forthwith at the same time and place offer the fee simple of the same for the best price it will bring. Namely—

South part of In Lot No. 38, in the old town of Lawrenceburg, containing thirty feet front on High Street, and running parallel through said Lot to New Street, with the appurtenances thereon; Seized and taken in execution as the property of Arthur Martin and Robert C. Martin, at the suit of Cornelius Miller, against said Martins, and Jeremiah Finney.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN,

That the subscriber will receive written proposals from any person or persons, wishing to rent either of the tenements on the school section in town No. 5, range 1, west, at any time previous to the 8th of September next; at which time the trustees will meet at the house of Eli Hill, on said section, to examine said proposals. The person making the best offer, will be considered the renter, on giving bond with approved security, for complying with the contract. If no proposals should be made, the trustees will on said 8th of Sept. proceed to rent, for the best terms they can, the different tenements on said section. The improvements on the N.W. & S.W. quarters will be rented for one year, with an opportunity of a crop of winter grain; the other two quarters only for a summer crop next season. For further particulars, inquire of either of the trustees.

SHERIFF’S SALE.

By virtue of sundry Executions to me directed from the Clerks office of the Dearborn Circuit Court; I will expose to sale at public vendue, at the Court House door in the town of Lawrenceburgh, on Saturday the first day of January 1825, between the hours of 10 and 5 o’clock on said day; the rents and profits for the term of 7 years against the following described property, Lands & Town lots, at the following suits to wit:

The undivided half of a Saw and Grist Mill & mill yard, together with ten Acres of land—also 50 acres of land, off the east end of S.E. qr. of sec. 33 T. 5, range 2 west, taken as the property of the East of Isaac Allen dec’d, to satisfy a judgment in favor of Zerah & Moses Towsey.

ALSO the undivided share of one hundred & forty Acres of Land, it being the south west qr. of sec. 2, town 4, range 2 west; taken as the property of Samuel Moore, at the suit of Jabez Percival.

ALSO a House and two lots, in the town of Wilmington, No. __ & __ taken as the property of Robert Moore at the suit of Jabez Percival.

ALSO two certain pieces of land, as follows to wit: 1 north west of Capt. Vance’s new house, supposed to contain eleven acres of ground, and was in-lots in the Town of Lawrenceburg, Dearborn county, but has been vacated, and is bounded as follows: on the south by High street, on the west by Mulberry row, including the same on the north by Partition lane; and on the east by Ash street to Mulberry row and Union street; from High street to Partition lane, and the alley’s within the bounds aforesaid. And also one other certain tract or parcel of land, or Cornfield, situated north and east of the Pond adjoining; and north of Hunt’s and Armstrong’s meadows, supposed as is said to contain ten acres; and are more particularly known and designated as being out-lots of the said town of Lawrenceburg, numbers, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 51, 52, 53, 54 and 55; all levied upon and returned and will be sold as the property of the said Samuel C. Vance to satisfy an execution in favor of the Presid’t and Directors of the Farmers & Mechanics Bank of Indiana.

ALSO the following In Lots in the town of Lawrenceburg, to wit: No. 37, 51, 52, 29, 30, 31, 32, & half 50, adjoining High street; Also the following subdivided In-Lots in the last mentioned town: Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60; Alos nine acres of land on the Ohio bank, about half a mile from the mouth of the great Miami, adjoining the lands of Timothy Davis and Samuel Elliott. All persons indebted to the estate of Mark Baker, late of Dearborn county, dec’d., are hereby requested to make immediate payment;–and all those having claims against the said estate, are requested to present them by the first day of February next, duly authenticated for settlement. I have appointed Edward O’Conner, living near Wilmington, to receive any moneys due the estate, and receipt for the same—he is also authorized to receive the claims aforesaid.

On Saturday the 31st day of December, in and adjoining the town of Lawrenceburgh, we will offer for sale a lot of Corn, estimated at seven hundred bushels, some Posts and Rails, Oats and Wheat in the stack, with other articles the property of the estate of Lazarus Noble, dec’d. A liberal credit will be given—the further terms of which will be made known on the day of sale.
